SDC REBOOT and IG Community Group are co-hosting an online event that to introduces the concept of governance theatre and explores how trustworthiness depends not only on technology and compliance, but also on mature governance systems, organisational culture and behavioural governance.
While considerable attention has been given to secure technologies and technical infrastructure, less focus has been placed on the governance capabilities needed to ensure these systems operate safely in practice.
Drawing on recent developments surrounding UK Biobank, the session argues that trust is not created by technology alone but through mature governance systems that understand fundamental principles of governance and flexibly works to integrate technical controls with independent oversight, disclosure expertise, governance literacy and proportionate risk management.
Event objectives
The presentation will explore what governance maturity looks like in practice, why it matters for maintaining public trust, and how research organisations can move beyond compliance towards more resilient and adaptive approaches to governing sensitive data. The session will be relevant to researchers, data custodians, policymakers and anyone interested in the future of trusted data access.
