Involving the public
Public Engagement in Data Research Initiative (PEDRI)
DARE UK is a founding partner of PEDRI, a sector-wide partnership bringing together organisations who work with data and statistics to generate insights that can inform policy and practice. PEDRI promotes good practice in public involvement and engagement, bring the public views to policymakers and data holders in a more meaningful way.
Mission
PEDRI partners are committed to exemplifying good public involvement and engagement practices in data-driven research and statistics. As organisations privileged to contribute to decisions on how public data is managed, we have a duty to listen to and understand what matters most to the public and act on their needs, interests, and concerns by involving them in our decision-making process.
Ongoing efforts
PEDRI partners across the UK are excited to come together for the very first time to demonstrate a strong commitment to bringing about real change in public involvement and engagement. To unlock the full potential of the access and use of data for research and statistics, the public needs to be actively and consistently heard, engaged and involved in decisions around how their data is used.
PEDRI partners recognise this need and are working collaboratively to develop a set of good practice standards, resources and campaigns to help bring the views of the public to policymakers and data holders. This will ensure that public data is being managed and used in ways that builds public trust and confidence in the safe, appropriate, and meaningful use of public data for research.
Initial areas of focus
- Embedding best practice guidance and principles for public involvement and engagement that are specific and fit for purpose for those working in data research and statistics.
- Addressing resource and information gaps for researchers and public involvement and engagement practitioners when it comes to proactively working with the public
- Proactively engaging the public so that we can listen to, understand and act on their concerns and build public confidence through local and national public campaigns.
