Data research delivers the greatest public benefit when it’s shaped with the people it affects. That’s why we’re a proud sponsor and contributor of the PEDRI (Public Engagement in Data Research Initiative) Forum 2026.

The PEDRI Forum 2026, taking place on 22 September at the Wellcome Trust in London, is a national event bringing together researchers, analysts, engagement practitioners, policymakers and members of the public. Through talks, workshops and interactive sessions, participants will explore what good Public Involvement and Engagement (PIE) practice looks like and share experiences across the sector, spotlighting inclusive and impactful approaches to engaging the public with data research. 

Why PEDRI Forum 2026 matters 

As conversations about data use, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data research infrastructure continue to evolve, PEDRI Forum 2026 provides an important opportunity to share learnings, challenge assumptions and build a stronger PIE culture across the sector.  

The Forum will: 

  • Explore moving beyond one-off consultations towards genuine partnerships with the public. 
  • Create a space to discuss practical approaches to involving people in decisions about data research. 
  • Showcase innovative PIE approaches being developed across the UK. 
  • Provide a space for attendees to share experience, learn from one another and encourage collaboration across the sector. 

These conversations are particularly important for the data research community to work collectively to address complex challenges and ensure that the data research infrastructure remains aligned with public expectations. 

Shaping data research together 

For DARE UK, working with the public is critical to our vision for a trustworthy data research ecosystem. We recognise that this ecosystem can only be built with public trust, which is gained through ongoing dialogue and shared decision-making. 

That is why we champion the inclusion and representation of public voices across all of our initiatives, funded projects and community groups. This commitment is exemplified in our support for PEDRI as a founding partner, ensuring that the initiative can play a leading role in promoting good practice in public engagement across the UK data research landscape and beyond. 

On the day, DARE UK’s Senior Engagement Manager Elizabeth Waind will present our ongoing work exploring public attitudes towards sensitive data and AI. She will share key findings and lessons learned from our initial pilot public dialogue, and outline ongoing work and crucial next steps for enriching our understanding of public attitudes towards AI development in Trusted Research Environments (TREs).
