Federated architecture blueprint
Draft technical architecture for establishing a secure network of Trusted Research Environments (TREs) to enhance research involving sensitive data across sectors and disciplines in the UK.
With funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), DARE UK (Data and Analytics Research Environments UK) was established to examine the requirements and tools to create a secure, connected, and interoperable network of TREs for sensitive data research across the UK. To improve research for public benefit, it is important to make access to diverse forms of sensitive data safer and faster.
With input from stakeholders, researchers and the public and guided by national and global best practices, DARE UK has developed a technical architecture for a proposed federated network of TREs to strengthen sensitive data research in the UK. A federated network of TREs would enable access to diverse types of sensitive data for research across different TREs. Such a federated network would harmonise security protocols across and between the TREs, allowing them to cooperate effectively and efficiently.
The initial draft architecture blueprint for a proposed federated national network of TREs was published for review and comments by experts and members of the public.

About the federated architecture blueprint
The draft federated architecture proposes to connect data service providers and TREs over a secure, managed data exchange network with strong safeguards for confidentiality, integrity, availability, and accountability. The proposed federation would be managed by a coordinating body overseen by strong national governance and would consist of a foundation layer and a core service layer.
A broad-based ecosystem of trusted research environments
We expect an ecosystem of TREs and service providers innovating continuously for their research communities. We believe this will ensure a balance between maintaining a high level of public trust and providing a rich analytical ecosystem for researchers to help address key societal challenges.
How the DARE UK Driver Projects fit in
The Driver Projects investigated some of the operational components of the draft federated architecture. We have explained and illustrated their innovations, showing where and how they fit in.
