PANORAMA: Pan-North Data Research Advancements for Multi-Domain Access and Analysis
Combining data from different sources can provide richer insights, but technical, legal, and governance barriers have slowed progress. PANORAMA is tackling these barriers by testing and piloting key TREvolution capabilities in Secure Data Environments (SDEs) in the North of England.
PANORAMA is a collaboration between NHS and university SDEs covering more than 15 million people across diverse regions in the North of England. The project aims to support the adoption of enhanced Trusted Research Environment (TRE) capabilities, making federated research faster, safer, and more consistent within and across SDEs/TREs.
PANORAMA seeks to address barriers to data access and federated research conducted across different fields and sectors within SDEs/TREs by testing the feasibility of operationalising key TREvolution components. Specifically, the project will pilot and assess the SATRE specification, federated analysis (TRE-FX), and AI/ML model semi-automated research output checking (SACRO) in Northern SDEs – Yorkshire and Humber Secure Data Environment, North West Secure Data Environment, and North East North Cumbria Secure Data Environment.
By testing and using these capabilities, PANORAMA will support efforts to adopt enhanced federated data services to build a national infrastructure that supports secure and interoperable data research for public benefit.
By the end of the project, PANORAMA will deliver the following key outputs:
- A pan-North Information Governance (IG) framework, based on the SATRE specification, to support future collaboration.
- Feasibility assessments on federated analysis and AI/ML model research output checking (SACRO) in SDEs, evaluating technical, governance, and operational aspects.
- Practical ‘How-To’ guides for adopting the SATRE specification, federated analysis, and SACRO in secure data settings.
- A report capturing insights from patient, public, and professional engagement activities, ensuring solutions meet public benefit criteria.
