TREvolution Products
Standardised Architecture for Trusted Research Environments (SATRE)
SATRE is a framework for assessing or designing Trusted Research Environments (TREs) to ensure they align with best practices in handling sensitive data in the UK. It will serve as the foundation for all TREvolution products, ensuring they can work well together.
The SATRE specification defines the capabilities of a TRE and allows for comparison between TREs. Version 2.0 includes advanced features like federation and control of AI/ML outputs, which are especially relevant for performing tasks between TREs.
Version 1.0 of SATRE was developed during the DARE UK Phase 1 Driver Projects to meet the needs of TRE organisations and their users. This version compiled best practices and essential capabilities for effective TRE operations in the UK.
Since its launch, SATRE has been adopted by TRE organisations in the UK, including those in academia, the NHS, and industry, which assess their TREs using the specification. It is also part of European efforts in the European Health Data Space.
As part of the TREvolution project, SATRE will be updated to Version 2.0 to incorporate feedback received after the SATRE Driver Project and the release of Version 1.0. This revision aims to strengthen its focus on federation and disclosure control to support broader objectives.
SATRE 2.0 will be explored by DARE UK Early Adopters, FOCUS-5, FRIDGE, PANORAMA and VISTA, who will assess the specification in real-world TREs and provide feedback and recommendations for refinement.
